Volunteers Needed! - Kenya Dental Mission
Ve'ahavta: The Canadian-Jewish Humanitarian Relief Committee is now recruiting volunteers for Ve'ahavta's first Volunteer Dental Mission in Kenya's IDP (internally displaced person) camps January 8-22, 2012.
We are partnering with local partner, Marafiki Community International to facilitate free dental care and education to resource-poor communities in Naivasha, Western Kenya.
We are still looking for 1-3 Volunteer Dentists to complete the volunteer team serving the dental health and education of Kenya's communities in need. Thank you for responding to our call to action and service and sharing this opportunity with your network as we work together to build a volunteer dental team for the people of Kenya.

Volunteer Dental Mission FAQs
What is the deadline for submitting my application?
The deadline for application is November 23rd. We are still in need of 1-3 enthusiastic dentistry professionals (dentists, dental surgeons) to complete this for this volunteer dental mission team. Please get in touch by email, phone or in person at the earliest convenience.
What are the key pre-trip dates (orientation, meetings, deadlines, etc?)
Upon submission of application, volunteers will arrange a volunteer screening with the International Project Coordinator (myself), in-person or via Skype conference to discuss the volunteer trip, requirements, opportunity for sharing skills and logistics. We will schedule pre-trip team orientation Mid-November and December and also request that outgoing volunteers participate in at least one pre-departure packing session at the office. Trip dates: January 8th –January 22nd.
What does the program donation ($3000) include?
The $3000 program donation includes the $500 deposit, flights, accommodation, ground-transportation, and all orientation, logistical support and supervision. Please bear in mind that volunteers are also eligible to apply for a stipend and/or payment plan if required and are encouraged to take full advantage of Ve'ahavta's support and online resources for fundraising.
What will volunteers DO in Kenya?
The trip itinerary includes a minimum 10 days of volunteer work, to facilitate a community-based model of dental outreach by providing free dental care and education with Ve'ahavta's partners Marafiki Community International (MCI) in the IDP (internally displaced person) camps of Maii Mahiu, Naivasha. The dental clinic will focus on dental hygienic care and public dental health education and preventive care as well as extraction and basic scaling among communities with little to no experience of dental care. Volunteers will have the opportunity tour MCI's local projects including feeding programs, education programs at the camp school and library, youth development and vocational training projects. The Kinder Kit team will be travelling in conjunction with Ve'ahavta's Kenya Dental Mission and both teams will have the opportunity to partake in some touristic activities including volunteer visit to Maasai Mara and safari. Volunteers will travel together and under the supervision of Ve'ahavta Coordinator, Melanie Lindayen.
Where will I be staying? What will I be eating?
Volunteer accommodations are Marafiki homestays with local Kenyan families. The Volunteers and Site-Coordinator both stay and commute from homestay to the site with Marafiki representatives and transportation. Homestays include room and board, as included in the program contribution, and can accommodate dietary needs and observations with some advance planning. Orientation and packing recommendations will be covered during the pre-departure team meeting. |
